Cold Mountain, which takes its title from a peak in the Great Balsam Mountains of Northern Carolina, certainly carries its author's knowledge of a particular area. You might think that natural description is what an author provides to let a reader imagine a place, the background against which the characters are placed. That last sentence, with its weirdly religious notion of turning anything seen in nature into an emblem, is natural for the daughter of a religious minister. The simile of the camera iris is hers: she has seen photographs taken and is much preoccupied with this modern (in the 1860s) art. The meanings attached to the scene are entirely Ada's. Even so, readers will likely laugh out loud and applaud. M OR F by Lisa Papademetriou & Chris Tebbetts RELEASE DATE: Oct. But the authors craftily keep readers guessing: is Jeffrey or isn't he? From the beginning, Marcus tells readers that this story would make a great film, and the conclusion, much like a typical teen movie, ramps up, then wraps a bit neatly. Some of the characters, such as Marcus's eccentric Southern grandmother, are scripted, and up-tight activist Jeffrey may not seem worth the fuss (though it eventually becomes clear why). But Frannie and Marcus then wonder: could Jeffrey be gay, too? Told from the friends' alternating perspectives, with plenty of online chats throughout, readers will like both of the flawed, funny protagonists, and appreciate their tight bond (they finish sentences for each other and spend Saturday nights watching offbeat movies together).
